Therapy & Affection

A walk in the beautiful park, strolling across the sandy beach, or growing your own food in the backyard, these are common outdoor activities that many seniors might do.  However, there are much more outdoor activities that the elderly would enjoy if they are exposed to the ideas.  For example, A boat ride out to the ocean can be relaxing with the fresh sea breeze running through the body along with a wonderful sight of the sky and ocean.  If taking it to the sea is not ideal because of seasickness or other reasons, maybe try something unique like metal detecting.  It can be done in parks, beaches, or other public places.  Birdwatching has also become one of the more popular activities for seniors, as it can be a great learning experience for many.  Finally, photography can be very easy to learn, especially with the emergence of digital cameras.  Once the senior learn their way around the in’s and out’s of the gadget, they are well on their way to take some photos!

The possibility for activities are endless, and it just takes some encouragement to convince the elderly to find something interesting to do.  A-1 Home Care in La Mirada has expert caregivers who can provide transportation to outdoor activities, meal preparation for the outdoor picnic, laundry, housecleaning, medication administration, mail organization, and running different errands.  With care provided by caregivers who are experienced, skilled, and reliable, one cannot go wrong with the services offered at A-1 Home Care.  We cover the cities of La Mirada, Santa Fe Springs, Los Alamitos, Downey, Norwalk, La Habra,  Whittier, Villa Park,Yorba Linda, and others in Orange County and Los Angeles County, catering to needs such as Alzheimer Care, Brain Injury Care, Arthritis Care, Incontinence Care, Multiple Sclerosis Care, Parkinson’s Care, Diabetes Care, Heart Attack Care, Cancer Care, After Surgery Care, and other Elderly Care Services.

1) Check your breasts in the mirror with straight shoulders and arms down.

Look out for:

  • Dimpling, puckering, or bulging of the skin
  • A nipple that has changed position or an inverted nipple (pushed inward instead of sticking out)
  • Redness, soreness, rash, or swelling

Step 2: Raise your arms and look for the same changes.

Step 3: Feel your breasts while lying down, using your right hand to feel your left breast and then your left hand to feel your right breast. Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together. Use a circular motion, about the size of a quarter.

Cover the entire breast from top to bottom, side to side — from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage.

Step 4: Feel your breasts while you are standing or sitting. Many women find that the easiest way to feel their breasts is when their skin is wet and slippery, so they like to do this step in the shower. Cover your entire breast, using the same hand movements described in step 3.

Most parents and guardians can agree that caring for the life and well being of another person is tough work. Not only does it require strength, patience and resilience to be responsible for the life of another, but it also takes a strong commitment to continue this work. And however much love one can have for this dependent, there is no denying that this is a task which is both physically and mentally draining.

In return for the love and care that that has been provided, many people often take it upon themselves to care for their parents in their seniority, just as their parents did for them. But similar to the exhaustion that parents feel, these people may find themselves having difficulty keeping up with their own responsibilities along with the needs of their now elderly parents.

Here at A-1 Home Care, we understand these desires to care for our parents, but we also realize the significance of rest. Without taking a breather once in a while, one can start to harbor feelings of resentment toward their responsibilities, including caregiving. In order to prevent such a rift in relationships and alleviate exhaustion, we offer respite caregivers to provide temporary assistance with your caregiving duties and give you the time to recharge. In addition to Respite Care, we also offer  Post Surgery Care, Alzheimer’s CareDiabetes Care, Cancer Care, and Arthritis Care. With caregiver trained in these categories, we can offer relief to both you and your elderly loved ones.

Is the Mediterranean Diet right for you?  If you’re trying to keep blood pressure low, have Arthritis, Diabetes, or Cancer, then most certainly!  The diet originates from the counties surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, such as Crete and Italy.  As people from these countries have the lowest rates of chronic diseases and people with the longest life spans, researchers and scientists found the key staples in their diet to share with the rest of the world.

Now, the Med Diet is considered one of the healthiest in the world.  It consists of many fruits and vegetables, fresh fish, nuts, olive oil, poultry, herbs and spices, and red wine.  The diet is high in healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, healthy monounsaturated fat, and lean protein.  Since the diet is so well-known, there are a variety of resources for different meal recipes that make it easy for families to adopt the diet into their lifestyle.  Check out some more information on the Mediterranean Diet and some sample recipes in different categories such as plant-based foods, fish and seafood, and poultry and dairy.

At A-1 Home Care, we know that for many Elders and Seniors, it can be difficult shopping for and preparing meals independently – whether it’s because of a lack of motivation to cook without anyone to enjoy the meal with or because a chronic illness such as Arthritis makes it difficult to shop and cook.  We provide caregivers for a variety of in-home care services who can assist with grocery shopping and healthy meal preparation on a 24 Hour Live-In Care or Hourly Care basis.

Some of our care services include Arthritis Care, Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care, Diabetic Care, Post Stroke Care, Heart Attack Care, and Multiple Sclerosis Care.

We serve the communities of La Mirada, Villa Park, Buena Park, Garden Grove, Newport Beach, Corona Del Mar, Huntington Beach, Tustin, Anaheim Hills, Yorba Linda, and others in Orange County.

Stroke is heavily correlated with diet and a sedentary lifestyle.  High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, and heavy drinking are all risk factors of having a stroke or heart attack.  To prevent a stroke or second stroke, it’s essential that lifestyle changes be made that include healthy nutrition and daily exercise.  An issue with learning about good dieting for a stroke victim is that physicians may be ill-informed or lack confidence to provide information on nutrition, even though it’s such a vital part of life after stroke to prevent another one from occuring.

“Even as rates of obesity and Type 2 diabetes soar, researchers report that doctors are spending less time than ever talking to patients about nutrition because they lack time, training, and optimism that patients can make lifestyle changes,” writes the author of this article from the Daily Gazette titled Diet Change Helpful in Preventing Heart Attack and Stroke.  The article also talks about the “Mediterranean Diet,” which can help in preventing inflammation from developing in artery walls, prevent stiff blood vessels, blockages, or plaque.  The diet consists of a high intake of olive oil, fruits, nuts, vegetables, and cereals, moderate amounts of fish and poultry, and low doses of dairy products, red and processed meat, and sweets.

At A-1 Home Care, we want to help your Elderly or Senior loved one who has suffered a stroke recuperate comfortable when they come back from the hospital or rehabilitation center.  With a focus on healthy living, our caregivers can assist with personal care, daily errands, and doctor/therapist recommendations that may include a healthy meal plan or daily exercise regimen.  We can provide Post Stroke Care on a 24 hour Live-In Care or Hourly Care basis.

All of our caregivers, nurse aides, companions, and home helpers must have prior at home caregiving experience, verifiable professional references, a National Background Check/DMV Check, Tuberculosis testing, Malpractice/Liability insurance, First Aid/CPR training, and a personal interview with our offices staff.

We serve the OC communities of La Mirada, Yorba Linda, Fullerton, Brea, Diamond Bar, Anaheim Hills, Villa Park, Garden Grove, Tustin, Irvine, La Habra, and others in Orange County.

A common dilemma that may arise as your Elderly or Senior loved one gets older is the question of when to use a cane or walker and whether or not your loved one would be open to the idea.  Although canes and walkers are designed to help an individual with balance and stability, there have been many reports of falls due to the improper use of these devices.  This article titled How Can I Convince My Mom to Start Using a Cane? showcases the all too common problem of an adult child trying to convince a parent to use a cane because of fear that they will fall if they don’t.  Bonita Lynne Beattie, VP for injury prevention for the Center for Health Aging provides some advice.  She says it is best to go through your doctor in referring you to a physical therapist who can convince your loved one why they can benefit from the use of a walking aid.  They can show your loved one the safe and proper way to use a cane or walker and also assess your loved one for additional ways to improve their walking, such as by engaging in daily exercise.  She also talks about how canes are becoming more “fashionable” and provides a link to a page that showcases some different cane styles.

The most discomforting aspect of depression in Elderly individuals is that they don’t seek medical help because they try to hide it or family members regard it to be a normal part of aging, when having depression isn’t normal at all.  It’s confusing because some medical illnesses and medication cause symptoms that are the same as those of depression, making it hard to discern a side effect of medicine, symptom of medical illness, or symptom of depression.  In any case, it’s important to have your loved one thoroughly examined by a doctor if you suspect that your loved one might be depressed.

Social isolation, living alone, declining health, illness, and loss of loved ones are main causes of depression in Elderly individuals.  For this reason, it’s important that your loved one has the support of caring individuals who can listen to the feelings and concerns of the Elderly individual and try to provide comfort, instead of having them bottled up inside, which is where the problem starts.  A-1 Home Care knows that you visit your loved one as often as possible, but it may not be enough.  We provide compassionate and qualified caregivers, nurse aides, and companions for Companion Services on a 24 hour live-in basis or hourly basis.  Our caregivers can provide your loved one with simple companionship and be their activity partner, pursuing various hobbies or activities with them.

A-1 Home Care is a Licensed Bonded and Insured non-medical homecare agency that has been in business since 1991 with an A+ Rating from the Better Business Bureau, Shield Accreditation, and thousands of positive testimonials.  We specialize in Elder Care services such as Arthritis Care, Alzheimer’s Care, Parkinson’s Care, Diabetic Care, and Cancer Care in the communities of La Mirada, Santa Fe Springs, Norwalk, La Habra, Los Alamitos, Downey, Buena Park, Whittier, Villa Park, Yorba Linda, and others in Orange County and Los Angeles County.
