Overnight Care for Sleep Disorders Associated with Parkinson’s

Is your elderly loved one keeping you up all night because of his insomnia?  Are you too anxious to go back to sleep for fear that your loved one might wander out of the house or trip and fall?  A-1 Home Care in La Mirada provides 8-hour and 12-hour shifts of overnight care for seniors who have sleep disturbance due to Parkinson’s disease.  Many families prefer round-the-clock care, which would take care of breakfast, lunch and dinner in addition to assistance with house chores and transportation.  The emotional and personality changes make it difficult for family members to be around their elderly loved ones, but the presence of a live-in caregiver acts as a buffer.

Two of our staff members at A-1 Home Care, Jackie Brown and Laura Torna, arrived at the Whittier Senior Center determined to bring some joy to the senior participants, and we ended up having one of the best times we’ve had there.  The event we planned was to celebrate Mardi Gras by having the seniors make themed masks using ribbons, sequins, glitter glues, and markers. All the senior participants displayed their creativity and made a variety of unique and colorful masks.  Some of them even got in to full Mardi Gras spirit and danced around with their mask on afterward!

We believe that you should find every possible way to stay happy, and A-1 Home Care is determined to bring the joy to seniors around our community as much as possible.  Since Valentine’s Day is near us, we set up a wonderful Valentine’s Day arts and crafts event at the Parnell Senior Center, thanks to the help of the interim activity coordinator Erin Hamilton.

Tables were all ready for us to set up, and once everyone was settled, you can sense the excitement in the air.  The seniors could not wait until we hand out the supplies for them to begin.  There were about 12 participants at the event, each were very friendly and very easy to talk to.  When speaking with them about their creations, they shared stories about baking, music, and even their grandchildren.  One of the participant, Betty, had so much fun with us, she even gave one of her bookmarkers to another participant for letting her know about the event!

Everyone wants to feel loved, and we hope to spread our love to the seniors each and every time we hold events in our community, no matter if it is Valentine’s Day or a simply a regular weekday.

A-1 Home Care Grandpa Care

Usually, families care for each other.  But when it comes to care for their senior and elderly loved ones, many arguments occur over the subject.  Here are a few reasons why you might be fighting within your family about elderly care.  People want their opinions respected, when adult siblings are having trouble concluding to a common view of needs to care for their elderly parent, friction between the different sides occur.  When this is the circumstances you are currently in, it is good to seek help from an expert guidance according to this article on A Place for Mom.  My own grandpa certainly acts grumpy and stubborn all the time, and many other seniors are turned off by the idea of receiving care from someone else.  Being in denial of losing their independence and hoping to not give it up is often the reason these elderly parents are resisting care. It is best to ease your loved ones by educating them about the benefits of receiving care, and that you are not trying to “put them away”.  Another hot topic among families is the cost of senior care, and how to pay for it.  If funding of care is not coming from the elderly parents themselves, conflicts are common when deciding the means to pay.  The best advice is to establish an open communication, understanding each person earns a different range of income, and burden may be more on some than others.

When the metastatic prostate cancer has spread to the bones, it can mean significant pain for the patient.  Radiation Therapy has a long track record of reducing pain for when the disease has reached the bone according to Dr Zelefsky during a CancerCare Workshop on the issue.  Typically, this type of therapy tends to be 10 sessions that last 2 weeks.  After the radiation therapy is over, many patients experience significant reduction in pain on their bones.  If doctors are able to pinpoint the disease, instead of the 10 session therapy, there is a possibility of a higher concentration of 2-3 session radiation therapy which has also seen success.  Patient needs to note that after such treatment, bones are more prone to fracture, and needs to take it easy on the bones after treatment.

The most discomforting aspect of depression in Elderly individuals is that they don’t seek medical help because they try to hide it or family members regard it to be a normal part of aging, when having depression isn’t normal at all.  It’s confusing because some medical illnesses and medication cause symptoms that are the same as those of depression, making it hard to discern a side effect of medicine, symptom of medical illness, or symptom of depression.  In any case, it’s important to have your loved one thoroughly examined by a doctor if you suspect that your loved one might be depressed.

Social isolation, living alone, declining health, illness, and loss of loved ones are main causes of depression in Elderly individuals.  For this reason, it’s important that your loved one has the support of caring individuals who can listen to the feelings and concerns of the Elderly individual and try to provide comfort, instead of having them bottled up inside, which is where the problem starts.  A-1 Home Care knows that you visit your loved one as often as possible, but it may not be enough.  We provide compassionate and qualified caregivers, nurse aides, and companions for Companion Services on a 24 hour live-in basis or hourly basis.  Our caregivers can provide your loved one with simple companionship and be their activity partner, pursuing various hobbies or activities with them.

A-1 Home Care is a Licensed Bonded and Insured non-medical homecare agency that has been in business since 1991 with an A+ Rating from the Better Business Bureau, Shield Accreditation, and thousands of positive testimonials.  We specialize in Elder Care services such as Arthritis Care, Alzheimer’s Care, Parkinson’s Care, Diabetic Care, and Cancer Care in the communities of La Mirada, Santa Fe Springs, Norwalk, La Habra, Los Alamitos, Downey, Buena Park, Whittier, Villa Park, Yorba Linda, and others in Orange County and Los Angeles County.

Caregiving is a delicate process in which the person being cared for has to earn your trust and feel comfortable around you.  Some caregivers really aren’t cut out for the job because they do it merely for the income.  When in the process of selecting a caregiver to provide in-home care for your Elderly or Senior loved one, it’s important to find someone who has the right motives and personality to do a great job without making your loved one feel uncomfortable or at risk because of carelessness.  So how do you find out if a caregiver is right for your loved one?  Of course, it’s always good to interview more than one candidate, and the real test of integrity lies in the caregiver’s answers to well-constructed questions that will shed light onto how the caregiver will provide care.  Check this article titled Good Qualities of a Caregiver that talks about empathy, patience, strong constitution, and reliability as desirable qualities.

Different diseases require different type of care.  Understanding which type of care you or your loved ones need can dramatically improve their quality of life as well as their survival rates.  For example, having someone trained specifically for dementia care can help the dementia patient with increased confidence, as well as productivity in tasks that they do.  With organizations like the Alzheimer’s Association, they have crafted specific programs to train caregivers catered to dementia.  As a result, the trained staff will have the needed knowledge and skills to give the best care for a dementia patient.  For a caregiver that caters to specific disease that affects your loved ones, please take the time to do the research if there is any specifically trained caregiver.  It is also a good idea to consult the doctors on this matter as well.
