Is the Mediterranean Diet right for you?  If you’re trying to keep blood pressure low, have Arthritis, Diabetes, or Cancer, then most certainly!  The diet originates from the counties surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, such as Crete and Italy.  As people from these countries have the lowest rates of chronic diseases and people with the longest life spans, researchers and scientists found the key staples in their diet to share with the rest of the world.

Now, the Med Diet is considered one of the healthiest in the world.  It consists of many fruits and vegetables, fresh fish, nuts, olive oil, poultry, herbs and spices, and red wine.  The diet is high in healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, healthy monounsaturated fat, and lean protein.  Since the diet is so well-known, there are a variety of resources for different meal recipes that make it easy for families to adopt the diet into their lifestyle.  Check out some more information on the Mediterranean Diet and some sample recipes in different categories such as plant-based foods, fish and seafood, and poultry and dairy.

At A-1 Home Care, we know that for many Elders and Seniors, it can be difficult shopping for and preparing meals independently – whether it’s because of a lack of motivation to cook without anyone to enjoy the meal with or because a chronic illness such as Arthritis makes it difficult to shop and cook.  We provide caregivers for a variety of in-home care services who can assist with grocery shopping and healthy meal preparation on a 24 Hour Live-In Care or Hourly Care basis.

Some of our care services include Arthritis Care, Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care, Diabetic Care, Post Stroke Care, Heart Attack Care, and Multiple Sclerosis Care.

We serve the communities of La Mirada, Villa Park, Buena Park, Garden Grove, Newport Beach, Corona Del Mar, Huntington Beach, Tustin, Anaheim Hills, Yorba Linda, and others in Orange County.

Stroke is heavily correlated with diet and a sedentary lifestyle.  High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, and heavy drinking are all risk factors of having a stroke or heart attack.  To prevent a stroke or second stroke, it’s essential that lifestyle changes be made that include healthy nutrition and daily exercise.  An issue with learning about good dieting for a stroke victim is that physicians may be ill-informed or lack confidence to provide information on nutrition, even though it’s such a vital part of life after stroke to prevent another one from occuring.

“Even as rates of obesity and Type 2 diabetes soar, researchers report that doctors are spending less time than ever talking to patients about nutrition because they lack time, training, and optimism that patients can make lifestyle changes,” writes the author of this article from the Daily Gazette titled Diet Change Helpful in Preventing Heart Attack and Stroke.  The article also talks about the “Mediterranean Diet,” which can help in preventing inflammation from developing in artery walls, prevent stiff blood vessels, blockages, or plaque.  The diet consists of a high intake of olive oil, fruits, nuts, vegetables, and cereals, moderate amounts of fish and poultry, and low doses of dairy products, red and processed meat, and sweets.

A common dilemma that may arise as your Elderly or Senior loved one gets older is the question of when to use a cane or walker and whether or not your loved one would be open to the idea.  Although canes and walkers are designed to help an individual with balance and stability, there have been many reports of falls due to the improper use of these devices.  This article titled How Can I Convince My Mom to Start Using a Cane? showcases the all too common problem of an adult child trying to convince a parent to use a cane because of fear that they will fall if they don’t.  Bonita Lynne Beattie, VP for injury prevention for the Center for Health Aging provides some advice.  She says it is best to go through your doctor in referring you to a physical therapist who can convince your loved one why they can benefit from the use of a walking aid.  They can show your loved one the safe and proper way to use a cane or walker and also assess your loved one for additional ways to improve their walking, such as by engaging in daily exercise.  She also talks about how canes are becoming more “fashionable” and provides a link to a page that showcases some different cane styles.

The most discomforting aspect of depression in Elderly individuals is that they don’t seek medical help because they try to hide it or family members regard it to be a normal part of aging, when having depression isn’t normal at all.  It’s confusing because some medical illnesses and medication cause symptoms that are the same as those of depression, making it hard to discern a side effect of medicine, symptom of medical illness, or symptom of depression.  In any case, it’s important to have your loved one thoroughly examined by a doctor if you suspect that your loved one might be depressed.

Social isolation, living alone, declining health, illness, and loss of loved ones are main causes of depression in Elderly individuals.  For this reason, it’s important that your loved one has the support of caring individuals who can listen to the feelings and concerns of the Elderly individual and try to provide comfort, instead of having them bottled up inside, which is where the problem starts.  A-1 Home Care knows that you visit your loved one as often as possible, but it may not be enough.  We provide compassionate and qualified caregivers, nurse aides, and companions for Companion Services on a 24 hour live-in basis or hourly basis.  Our caregivers can provide your loved one with simple companionship and be their activity partner, pursuing various hobbies or activities with them.

When someone you love is diagnosed with Cancer, it’s important to never keep any secrets.  Families are different in the way they handle their discussions about Cancer, especially with their children.  While it might be common sense to keep a Cancer diagnosis a secret from a young child, eventually they are going to find out.  It’s better to let them know of the situation according to their age and in terms they can understand.  This article from Chesapeake Family has more to say on the subject, “According to the ACS, ‘Children who are included in this experience from the beginning with truthful information in small doses will have less anxiety than children whose parents are more evasive,” says the article on the subject of a parent’s vital communication.

At A-1 Home Care, we can help your family deal with the difficulties associated with Cancer.  Caregiving, money, and time management will have a large impact on your family, and you’ve got to decide whether you can handle caregiving within the family, or if hiring outside help would be beneficial and worth the investment for your family.  If outside help seems like a good idea, we can provide experienced and compassionate caregivers for in-home Cancer Care.  Our caregivers have experience caring for individuals who have just gone through chemotherapy or radiation therapy and are familiar with side effects commonly experienced, such as the effects of fatigue, anxiety, hair loss, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, and other problems.

A-1 Home Care has caregivers available immediately for 24 hour live-in care or hourly part-time care.  We specialize in Senior Care services such as Cancer Care, Alzheimer’s Care, Parkinson’s Care, Arthritis Care, and Hospice Care in the communities of La Mirada, Santa Fe Springs, Norwalk, La Habra, Los Alamitos, Yorba Linda, Villa Park, Downey, Whittier, and other cities in Orange County and Los Angeles County.

Our non-medical homecare agency has been in business since 1991 with an A+ Rating from the Better Business Bureau and Shield Accreditation.  If your loved one has long term insurance coverage, we accept Penn Treaty, CALPERS, John Hancock, MetLife Insurance, Veteran Administration, and Bankers’ Life & Casualty.
