a-1 home care dementiaThe decrease of dopamine in the brain correlates with the decreased ability to voluntarily control muscle movement, which is a hallmark trait of Parkinson’s disease.  The role of dopamine in humans and animals is multifaceted; it’s associated with movement, memory, mood, learning, sleep, behavior, pleasurable reward, and cognition.  In Parkinson’s disease, the abnormally low levels of dopamine results in no voluntary control over muscles, loss of sense of smell, constipation, and sleep disturbance.  As time progresses, the symptoms get worse.  For 25 years, concerned family members have turned to A-1 Home Care in La Mirada for 24-hour in-home support for their elderly loved ones.  Round-the-clock caregiver support gives immense relief to full-time working adults and personalized care for seniors with Parkinson’s.

Overnight Care for Sleep Disorders Associated with Parkinson’s

Is your elderly loved one keeping you up all night because of his insomnia?  Are you too anxious to go back to sleep for fear that your loved one might wander out of the house or trip and fall?  A-1 Home Care in La Mirada provides 8-hour and 12-hour shifts of overnight care for seniors who have sleep disturbance due to Parkinson’s disease.  Many families prefer round-the-clock care, which would take care of breakfast, lunch and dinner in addition to assistance with house chores and transportation.  The emotional and personality changes make it difficult for family members to be around their elderly loved ones, but the presence of a live-in caregiver acts as a buffer.

Summer is the perfect time to relax for retirees, but it can also be dangerous because of the heat and their older age.  To make sure your loved ones are safely enjoying their time this summer, here are some useful tips to will keep seniors safe this summer.

  1. Always stay hydrated – Many of us don’t drink enough water, but this is especially dangerous for seniors because they are more susceptible to dehydration
  2. Keep cool – If it gets too hot, find places with air conditioning.  Whether it is the mall or the library, don’t take the chances and endure the heat.
  3. Wear  sunglasses – Cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration are common vision problems for seniors. Ultraviolet rays can further damage your eyes, accelerating the disease’s progress
  4. Exercise in the morning or later in the evening – Exercise is great for us, but never exercise during peak sun hours where risk of heat stroke will be highest
  5. Know your emergency contacts – In case of any health issues, knowing who to call quickly can prevent any further issues.

Seniors have a lot of free time, but don’t be afraid of enjoying outdoor activities because of the danger of the heat. Simply follow these tips and you will have a great time this summer!

Happy senior couple cooking together at kitchen. Focus on man.

Whether you have been looking to eat healthier or are trying to find motivation to stick with healthy diets, National Nutrition Month is a great starting point for all to celebrate a healthy lifestyle and remind ourselves the importance of eating right.  For those struggling to figure out where to begin, here are some tips from the Washington Post on how to jump start your health!

First and foremost, you should formulate a plan.  Plan out your meals on a weekly basis and coordinate your grocery runs, so you know which type of healthy choices to buy and cook.  Next, try to keep the healthy foods in or near the kitchen. The more convenient it is to pick out your salad, the more likely you will make the choice of eating the salad.  In addition to eating the right food, it is also important to learn the critical part breakfast plays in our diet.  It is always a good idea to load up during breakfast, so you have the necessary energy to go on with the day, then eat lighter as the day goes on.  Loading up at dinner when you will be sleeping a few hours later might not be the best idea. Finally, get into the mindset of earning your calories.  Whether it is by exercising, portion control, or other methods, try to find a way to be disciplined and not indulge in calories.

A-1 Home Care in La Mirada only hires the most versatile and compassionate caregivers around town.  We make sure they have the experience and skills to provide meal preparation, light housecleaning, transportation, medication reminders, mail organization, and much more.  We have both live-in or hourly caregivers available , and they provide quality home care services in Kidney Disease Care,  Cancer Care, Parkinson’s Care,  Alzheimer’s Care, Brain Injury Care, Arthritis Care, Diabetic Care, Multiple Sclerosis Care, Hospice Care,Incontinence Care, and other home care challenges.  Our company covers all of Los Angeles and Orange County, including the cities of La Mirada, Santa Fe Springs, Downey, Whittier, Norwalk, La Habra, Yorba Linda,Buena Park, and Los Alamitos.

Two of our staff members at A-1 Home Care, Jackie Brown and Laura Torna, arrived at the Whittier Senior Center determined to bring some joy to the senior participants, and we ended up having one of the best times we’ve had there.  The event we planned was to celebrate Mardi Gras by having the seniors make themed masks using ribbons, sequins, glitter glues, and markers. All the senior participants displayed their creativity and made a variety of unique and colorful masks.  Some of them even got in to full Mardi Gras spirit and danced around with their mask on afterward!

We believe that you should find every possible way to stay happy, and A-1 Home Care is determined to bring the joy to seniors around our community as much as possible.  Since Valentine’s Day is near us, we set up a wonderful Valentine’s Day arts and crafts event at the Parnell Senior Center, thanks to the help of the interim activity coordinator Erin Hamilton.

Tables were all ready for us to set up, and once everyone was settled, you can sense the excitement in the air.  The seniors could not wait until we hand out the supplies for them to begin.  There were about 12 participants at the event, each were very friendly and very easy to talk to.  When speaking with them about their creations, they shared stories about baking, music, and even their grandchildren.  One of the participant, Betty, had so much fun with us, she even gave one of her bookmarkers to another participant for letting her know about the event!

Everyone wants to feel loved, and we hope to spread our love to the seniors each and every time we hold events in our community, no matter if it is Valentine’s Day or a simply a regular weekday.

A-1 Home Care is proud to be serving our communities for over two decades, and we want to continue to be involved in our communities as much as possible.  Our want to spread the joy among seniors, just like how our caregivers would improve quality of life for our clients.  If you are interested in any of our home care services and live around La Mirada, Whittier, Downey, Pico Rivera, or surrounding communities, we specialize in Arthritis Care, Parkinson’s Care, Alzheimer’s Care, After Surgery Care, Multiple Sclerosis Care, Cancer Care, Hospice Care, Incontinence Care, and more!

Is the Mediterranean Diet right for you?  If you’re trying to keep blood pressure low, have Arthritis, Diabetes, or Cancer, then most certainly!  The diet originates from the counties surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, such as Crete and Italy.  As people from these countries have the lowest rates of chronic diseases and people with the longest life spans, researchers and scientists found the key staples in their diet to share with the rest of the world.

Now, the Med Diet is considered one of the healthiest in the world.  It consists of many fruits and vegetables, fresh fish, nuts, olive oil, poultry, herbs and spices, and red wine.  The diet is high in healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, healthy monounsaturated fat, and lean protein.  Since the diet is so well-known, there are a variety of resources for different meal recipes that make it easy for families to adopt the diet into their lifestyle.  Check out some more information on the Mediterranean Diet and some sample recipes in different categories such as plant-based foods, fish and seafood, and poultry and dairy.

At A-1 Home Care, we know that for many Elders and Seniors, it can be difficult shopping for and preparing meals independently – whether it’s because of a lack of motivation to cook without anyone to enjoy the meal with or because a chronic illness such as Arthritis makes it difficult to shop and cook.  We provide caregivers for a variety of in-home care services who can assist with grocery shopping and healthy meal preparation on a 24 Hour Live-In Care or Hourly Care basis.

Some of our care services include Arthritis Care, Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care, Diabetic Care, Post Stroke Care, Heart Attack Care, and Multiple Sclerosis Care.

We serve the communities of La Mirada, Villa Park, Buena Park, Garden Grove, Newport Beach, Corona Del Mar, Huntington Beach, Tustin, Anaheim Hills, Yorba Linda, and others in Orange County.

A common dilemma that may arise as your Elderly or Senior loved one gets older is the question of when to use a cane or walker and whether or not your loved one would be open to the idea.  Although canes and walkers are designed to help an individual with balance and stability, there have been many reports of falls due to the improper use of these devices.  This article titled How Can I Convince My Mom to Start Using a Cane? showcases the all too common problem of an adult child trying to convince a parent to use a cane because of fear that they will fall if they don’t.  Bonita Lynne Beattie, VP for injury prevention for the Center for Health Aging provides some advice.  She says it is best to go through your doctor in referring you to a physical therapist who can convince your loved one why they can benefit from the use of a walking aid.  They can show your loved one the safe and proper way to use a cane or walker and also assess your loved one for additional ways to improve their walking, such as by engaging in daily exercise.  She also talks about how canes are becoming more “fashionable” and provides a link to a page that showcases some different cane styles.

A-1 Home Care Grandpa Care

Usually, families care for each other.  But when it comes to care for their senior and elderly loved ones, many arguments occur over the subject.  Here are a few reasons why you might be fighting within your family about elderly care.  People want their opinions respected, when adult siblings are having trouble concluding to a common view of needs to care for their elderly parent, friction between the different sides occur.  When this is the circumstances you are currently in, it is good to seek help from an expert guidance according to this article on A Place for Mom.  My own grandpa certainly acts grumpy and stubborn all the time, and many other seniors are turned off by the idea of receiving care from someone else.  Being in denial of losing their independence and hoping to not give it up is often the reason these elderly parents are resisting care. It is best to ease your loved ones by educating them about the benefits of receiving care, and that you are not trying to “put them away”.  Another hot topic among families is the cost of senior care, and how to pay for it.  If funding of care is not coming from the elderly parents themselves, conflicts are common when deciding the means to pay.  The best advice is to establish an open communication, understanding each person earns a different range of income, and burden may be more on some than others.

A-1 Home Care in La Mirada offers affordable in home care services for seniors and elderly.  We have expert caregivers in a variety of in home elderly care services, including Parkinson Care, Alzheimer CareAfter Surgery Care, Cancer Care, Diabetes Care, and Incontinence Care, with flexible scheduling to accommodate 24 hour live in care or hourly live-out care.
